1 Hydration and Electrolytes

May 27, 2013

"Drink before you're thirsty"?
Yeah, right, if you're thirsty, you're toast so guzzle water before that??

Me, I drink so much, it's a problem: I need to plan ahead for rest stops!  What a time sink and have you looked at the rest stops in STP after several thousand people have used them?  Not nice.
What's a person to do or is it a "pee or !!FAIL!! or fail situation??

Definitely, drink before thirsty, but when and how much to avoid !!FAIL!!?

  1. Cramps!
  2. slosh!
  3. dehydration/desiccation!
  4. Temperature stroke or hypothermia!

Yep, if the weather is at all warm in the middle of July, a simple way to !!FAIL!! on STP, is:
forget about water and electrolytes!.

Since I think I have much of this "dialed in" and I certainly don't want to forget, I'll capture:

  1. The miseries: how much is enough: stopping at every pot-a-potie or feeling hot and dry
  2. Not having enough electrolytes:  !!FAIL!!
  3. Review: fuel solvent - the osmotic factor and thrist
  4. Key issue: temperature dependency
  5. Random kinds of liquid

What's a body to drink (when trying to ride 200 miles)?
